NYC retroactively dismisses fines given to Synagogues for Covid violations

In light of a ruling by a NY District Court Judge, the NYC Sheriff notified community representatives that all fines levied on places of worship for violating Governor Cuomo’s executive orders pertaining to Covid-19 will be retroactively dismissed.

The development follows an order by the District Judge that issued a permanent injunction and bars all Cuomo’s Executive Orders on Houses of Worship that limits capacity in Orange and Red zones as it violates religious freedom enshrined in the US constitution.

The move was announced by The Community board on Twitter, stating: We were notified by Councilman Kalman Yeger that after discussing with the NYC Sheriff, the permanent injunction ending capacity limits for religious worship, the Sheriff will withdraw all summonses issued to houses of worship for Covid violations.

The ruling seemingly caught city officials off guard. Mayor DeBlasio responded by saying, “I need to talk to the law department about what we think of that decision and how we’re gonna proceed, and how the state will proceed on that.”
