Former President Trump has thanked Senator Roy Blunt for his support after he announced his retirement.
“I very much appreciate and respect the career of Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri. He was one of the first people who came to my defence against the Impeachment Hoax, and it was greatly appreciated by me. Congratulations to the entire Blunt family, and to Roy on a wonderful career!” wrote Trump.
Blunt, a two-term senator, has been generally supportive of Trump. He did not give a particular reason for his retirement, beyond his longevity.
In declining to run in 2022, Blunt joins retiring Republican Sens. Rob Portman of Ohio, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Richard Shelby of Alabama and Richard Burr of North Carolina.
