The House moved to impeach President Donald Trump on Wednesday for with bipartisan support of 232 to 197 who opposed. Making him the first President in US history to be impeached twice.
The impeachment article implicates him in inciting the attack on the U.S. Capitol last week that left at least five people, including a Capitol Police officer, dead. It accuses President Trump of “incitement of insurrection”.
!0 Republicans voted in favor while some Republicans, including House Leader Kevin McCarthy, blamed President Trump for the insurrection at the Capitol last week but denounced the impeachment as divisive and voted against it on procedural grounds.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said the chamber plans to send an article of impeachment to the Senate immediately, though the chamber may not have enough time to remove Trump before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
Senator Mitch McConnell already clarified that he would not agree to use emergency powers to bring the Senate back into session for a trial before Jan. 19.
